Getting the Right pH Paper

ph-paperGetting the right pH paper really means getting pH paper that has the correct pH range with the ability to resolve relatively small differences in pH.  Litmus paper, which merely indicates that a liquid is either Acid or Alkaline will not work.

The most commonly used pH paper is pHydrion product from Micro Essential Laboratory. The best range to use is the pH 5.5 to 8.0 paper because it can resolve pH changes as small as 0.2 units.  This makes it the best choice of urine testing.  Alternatively, you could successfully use the pHyrdion paper with the 4.5 to 8.5 range.  The resolution is 0.5 units but it covers a broader pH range.  Either will work.

Your local pharmacy may carry this pH paper or should be able to special order it for you.  It is not expensive.  Many Functional Medicine practitioners and Clinical Nutritionists carry this paper in their office for patients / clients.

biology-of-belief-bookEpi-Genetics:   (Epi-: prefix taken from the Greek that means “on, upon, at, by, near, over, on top of, toward, against, among.”)

This is often referred to as the New Biology and asserts that genes are not the rigid controlling determinants of our future health. Genes do not “self-express” or, said differently, they don’t turn themselves ON.  Factors in the environment, such as toxic substances, emotional states, Vitamin D3, personal beliefs, and others, comprise the experiences that cells “perceive” which in turn affects gene expression.  It is a revolutionary concept which will slowly change how we view health and disease.

One of the most dynamic and engaging writers and speakers on the Epi-Genetic research is former professor of medicine, Dr. Bruce Lipton. You may enjoy his primary book on epi-genetics, entitled: “The Biology of Belief”. This book is available in both audio and printed versions through major book sellers. You may also order by clicking on the book image to the left.  Dr. Lipton is an extremely engaging and dynamic speaker and certainly conveys his passion and understanding of this immensely important topic.  If you have an opportunity to hear him by attending one of his speaking engagements, I heartily recommend it.

Alkaline Water Devices:

There are a number of ways you can have alkaline water for use at home.  One way is to simply purchase a good quality alkaline water and bring it home.  This is an acceptable solution if your primary use of the water will be for drinking only.  But should you intend to use alkaline water for cooking, beverages, making rice, in soups, etc., that could represent a lot of cases of water.

Option #2 then, is to invest is a point-of-use water ionizer / alkalinizer, which will produce high quality alkaline water on demand.  These devices are commonly manufactured in Japan, where they are regarded by their Ministry of Health as medical devices due to their healthful benefits. The better units will filter the incoming water, pass it through a UV light tube to kill any parasites, bacteria or viruses, and then create an alkaline water via electrolysis for your use. One of the unspoken benefits is that it also creates a “micro-cluster” water, which has a lower surface tension and therefore is considered more hydrating than common water sources.

Prices on these units do vary but there is no need to overpay.  Sadly, I have seen clients pay upwards of $5000 for such a unit, which in my opinion, is drastically over-priced.  If this technology interests you, I would suggest you look at the water ionizer from High Tech Health, at  I have had two of these units for several years now. They are easy to maintain, replacement cartridges are inexpensive, the technology is excellent and the units are not over-priced.  You can make a gallon of alkaline water for about 15 cents and the device will produce 1.5 gallons per minute. The folks at High Tech Health have been around for 20 years and this is the unit that most leading health experts recommend.  They have been kind enough to offer our clients a special discount over the years, so be sure to ask for it.  (PS: I don’t sell these units and I don’t get paid to share this information.)

Alkalinizing Drinks:

“Green Drinks” as they are commonly called, are an excellent way to significantly enhance your intake of important phytonutrients, micronutrients, trace minerals, chlorophyll and so many other know and unknown plant constitutents that affect our health and modulate gene expression.  And traditionally, they are a powerful part of an effective alkalinizing program!  These drinks are a great way to enhance an aready healthy orgainc-foods diet, but are also an important way to get these nutrients when your schedule is tight or when traveling.

When selecting a high quality green drink, you want to look at 3 key factors: the ingredients, how the ingredients have been handled, and, of course, taste.  The best green drink won’t do you much good if you can’t stand the taste!   Some lesser quality green drinks may include less expensive filler greens, rather than the more costly ingredients.  Ingredients such as spirulina or chlorella may not be “cracked-wall” forms and thus less bio-available to your digestive system.  And of course, it should be organic, unheated, and back-flushed with nitrogen to expell most of the oxidizing oxygen from the container.
Over the years, I have tried many but my current favorite is “Nano Greens” by BioPharma.  Not only does it taste great, but all of the other concerns about quality, manufacturing and ingredients handling have been met.  I can also get it is single-serving sleeves for when I travel.  If you have not found a high quality green drink that you can drink and enjoy, I would encourage you to try Nano-Greens.

We will be including a link on this site within the next weeks to allow you to order directly if you don’t have an easy source of Nano-Greens available to you. It is a great way to get the extra nutrients and help balance your pH.

Stress Antidotes:

The role of stress in our daily lives is hard to estimate and studies suggest that people are generally not very adept at accurately sensing the level of physiological and psychological stress they carry until it breaks through into disabling symptoms.  Fortunately, there are any number of methods and techniques you can adopt to help antidote the effects or daily or periodic acute stress.   These practices literally change the neural connections in the brain allowing people to respond in a less reactive way to stressors. The science of “the relaxation response” was pioneered by Herbert Benson at Harvard University with the publication of a book by the same name. It was an excellent start and brought the issue to public consciousness. Studies have shown that some of these practices can effectively and naturally lower cortisol levels and raise DHEA. Other studies have demonstrated a protective effect by lowering the risk of heart attack. Overall, people feel better, think more clearly, and sleep better at night.

At the present time, my preferred recommendation to clients is that of practicing heart coherence.

Heart Coherence – Beyond Relaxation
and Meditation

In years past, integrative healthcare practitioners encouraged and taught “relaxation” training, as an antidote to the “fight or flight” response of our sympathetic nervous system. The benefits, as with meditation, are real and cumulative if you commit to daily practice.   Meditation and relaxation exercises can and do provide benefits.

Heart coherence, however, is a very special state which is measurably different, both physiologically and psychologically from being “relaxed”. (We see a lot of people who try to relax and become more fidgety and restless than when they were “busy”. Many have simply forgotten how to relax in body and mind!!) Rather than working through the brain, heart coherence works through the heart field, to coordinate the cardiovascular, endocrine, nervous system, digestive system, and brain wave patterns, so everything is in sync. With heart coherence, you can be in a meeting, speaking before a group, running a marathon, while in a high state of coherence rather than when only sitting is a quiet, darkened room, with no noise, chanting “OM”.

The emerging research on the benefits of being in a state of heart coherence suggest we are on the doorstep to a new frontier of creating the healthy, resilient minds and bodies we have long sought. While this web page cannot do justice to the depth and scope of research studies, clinical feedback, and experience acquired on heart coherence, we wanted to bring it to your attention as an extremely valuable tool and practice for those seeking truly whole-being health.  My experience is that practicing heart coherence for 15 minutes once or twice a day is the “fast-track”  to the benefits of acquired only after years of meditation.

There are several devices and technologies on the market that provide the technical feedback for practicing heart coherence and I have reviewed most of them. It is, afterall, based on the feedback of heart rate variability patterns, which require sensors to pick-up the heart rhythm, analyze it, and feed back the information to you.  Based on my research of the products and technology, we can comfortably recommend the emWave from HeartMath.  For more information, please click below.

Finding Professional Help

The links below refer to various professional organizations whose members are in some manner educated and qualified in the practice of Functional Medicine / advanced Clinical Nutrition. These organizations usually have some sort of “Find a Practitioner” service on their websites.   A practitioner who goes out of his / her way to learn these skills and become Certified as such, are more likely to understand pH and work with you.  Please understand that professional groups are not especially homogenous: not every practitioner will work from the same set of clinical tools as another professional.  If you find one or more candidates in your area, you may with to contact their office or go in for an interview, to see if they can work with you toward your particular healh goals.
